Florida State landed a running back / receiver with exceptional speed.
Corey Wren is also a prospect who could compete on the track.
The Harvey (La.) John Curtis standout had 1,146 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior. And on the track, he was a two-time indoor state champion in the 60 meters with a personal best of 6.80 seconds.
“Corey is an elite level track and field specialist,” FSU football coach Mike Norvell said. “I expect him to go out there and compete well for our track team if that’s the direction he wants to go. I think that’s something that we’re definitely going to do moving forward. I like players that can compete at an elite level not only on the football field but in any other sports program that can help our teams win championships.”
The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Wren totaled 3,126 all-purpose yards in his high school career. He averaged 11.4 yards per carry, totaling 2,309 yards on 202 carries and scored 36 total touchdowns.
He is officially listed as a running back / athlete by FSU and it appears he will begin his career with the running backs in the fall. Wren would have time in the spring to be a sprinter, although he will have busy days if he is taking part in offseason football workouts while also running track.
Scott adds to OL haul
Coaches often state that recruiting is about relationships. Norvell played at Central Arkansas and was familiar with offensive tackle Robert Scott, who grew up in Conway, Ark., and played high school football just a few miles from the FSU coach’s alma mater.
“I’ve been watching Robert since he was a sophomore in high school,” Norvell said. “A lot of great relationships there that were able to identify the right fit, and what Robert is going to bring into our program we think is really special.”
Lundy a ‘well-rounded’ signee
DJ Lundy had a storied high school career in Ocilla, Ga. He won a state championship in football as a senior and also a state wrestling title. Lundy was a perfect 13-0 on the football field in 2019 and went 36-0 in wrestling, too.
Lundy made his signing with FSU official on Wednesday as he picked the Seminoles over Georgia and Virginia Tech.
“One of the best linebackers in the state of Georgia, a young man that I think has the ability to be able to come in and compete early,” Norvell said. “And just an incredible young man off the field. Excited to be able to add him to the class.”
Williams earned late offer
Norvell confirmed that FSU made an offer to Sidney Williams of Mobile (Ala.) Vigor on Tuesday night. The FSU staff clearly knew it had a scholarship spot open, and Williams signed on Wednesday.
“He had a couple setbacks,” Norvell said. “He had an injury that cut his senior year short. He’s done a wonderful job in his rehabilitation. We were able to get him on campus and show him all that Tallahassee had to offer and Florida State.”
Team rankings
FSU is 19th in the ESPN team rankings and 22nd in the 247Sports team rankings. Those rankings could fluctuate but it’s evident that FSU has a class that is fourth in the ACC behind No. 1 Clemson while North Carolina and Miami are between 15-20 (depending on the recruiting service).
A familiar walk-on
FSU also brought in a large group of walk-ons. While all of the names are not yet known, there is one familiar name who is coming to Tallahassee: Ben Ostaszewski.
His dad, Henry, and uncle, Joe, each played at FSU from 1988-91 under coach Bobby Bowden. Ben Ostaszewski, who is 6-5 and 240 pounds, played just a year of high school football but joins a position group that is thin on depth with Tre’ McKitty transferring to Georgia and Gabe Nabers graduating.
